This year is the 60th anniversary of 1962 war when Indian Army showed great courage and dedication against heavy odds to stand tall against Chinese aggression. It should also be noted that it was in 1999, when Tawang War Memorial was established by the locals to pay tribute to the heroes of 1962. It has been renovated on the 60th anniversary of the 1962 war and was inaugurated on 21 November jointly by Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Shri Pema Khandu and Lt Gen RP Kalita, Army Commander, Eastern Command in presence of Lt Gen DS Rana the GOC of Gajraj Corps and several high-level dignitaries. The renovated memorial pays tribute to 2420 brave warriors who laid down their lives during the war. The war memorial is designed in unique Chorten shape, combining Indian and Tibetan cultural elements. It has two newly constructed rooms showcasing war memorabilia like maps, pictures and other artifacts from ’62 war. An extension walk lined by busts of 18 of the fallen heroes each with a write up will inspire the younger generations. The memorial is yet another step in honouring the memories of those who made supreme sacrifice and such institutionalisation will continue to inspire our younger generations.
