Chief Minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga, announced on Tuesday that the new Assam Rifles complex in Mizoram will be inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on March 17.
The complex is located at Zokhawsang near Aizawl, around 15 km from the city. The relocation of the Assam Rifles camp from the heart of Aizawl to Zokhawsang was a top priority for the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) in the November 2018 assembly polls. In line with this, the Union Home Ministry directed the Assam Rifles to shift its battalion headquarters to Zokhawsang by May 31, 2019.
The oldest paramilitary force in the country has two Assam Rifles bases located in Zodin and Khatla, situated in the center of the city. However, the one located in Zodin is being relocated to Zokhawsang.
Last November, during a meeting with Amit Shah, Zoramthanga had communicated that the delay in moving the Assam Rifles camp was causing a hold-up in infrastructural projects in the state capital.
