Conrad K Sangma, the NPP’s president, visited Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan on Friday to seek the formation of the state government. As the former chief minister, Sangma claimed that he had the backing of “over 32 MLAs” out of the 60-member assembly, but he did not disclose which parties were supporting him.

According to reports, Sangma held a press conference before heading to Raj Bhawan where he stated that the BJP had already pledged their support and that other parties had also expressed their support.

On Friday, Sangma stated, “We have a complete majority. The BJP has already offered its support, and a few others have also extended their support.”

Ernest Mawrie, the state BJP president, reportedly stated that the NPP has the support of 34 MLAs. It is believed that this is due to the fact that the party has received the backing of MLAs from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Independents, as well as the BJP.

During the Meghalaya elections on February 27, the NPP emerged as the biggest party by winning 26 out of 59 constituencies. The BJP, HSPDP, and PDF secured two seats each, and two Independent candidates also won victories.

The UDP, which was previously an ally of the NPP in the Conrad K Sangma government, emerged as the second-largest party, winning 11 constituencies. Ā The Congress and Mamata Banerjee-led TMC each won five seats. The newly formed Voice of the People Party (VPP) won four seats, while the HSPDP and PDF won two seats each. Additionally, two Independent candidates were also victorious in the polls. According to Mawrie, the new government will be sworn in on March 7, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present at the ceremony.
