In compliance with directives from the Union Home Ministry, the Border Security Force (BSF) has initiated deployment along the India-Myanmar border in the Manipur sector. This move aims to bolster surveillance along the porous borders, as announced by Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Tuesday.
During a session in the state assembly on February 29, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh disclosed that a comprehensive security apparatus has been put into action across Manipur. This includes the deployment of 198 companies of Central Armed Police Forces, 147 columns of the Army, 141 Assam Rifles columns, along with approximately 40,000 state forces actively engaged in operations throughout the region.
Furthermore, responding to demands from ruling government MLAs, Meira Paibis, and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Union Home Minister has pledged to deploy an additional border guard force along the Manipur-Myanmar border. This decision comes after sustained advocacy from various voluntary organizations and certain MLAs, who have advocated for the replacement of the Assam Rifles.
Presently, the Assam Rifles are stationed at strategic locations along the Manipur borders with Myanmar. The deployment of the BSF and the assurance of further reinforcements underscore the government’s commitment to strengthening border security and addressing the concerns raised by local stakeholders.
