A teacher of Khagrachari Government Technical School and College in Bangladesh was beaten to death for allegedly raping an indigenous student belonging to Tripura community at school campus on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Abul Hasnat Mohammad Sohel Rana,a teacher of Khagrachhari Government Technical School and College said Mahmuda Begum, additional superintendent of police in Khagrachhari. Ripple Bappi Chakma, residential medical officer of the hospital, said the alleged rapist was declared dead when he was brought to the hospital around 2:00 pm.

“The fourteen years old student victim is from Tripura community who told us that she was raped by the teacher Sohel Rana inside the school campus on Tuesday morning”, said the Dr.Aman Ullah Al Hasan, principal of the college, said people of the indigenous community attacked Sohel Rana on the college campus around 11:00am following the allegations that he raped a student.

Following the incident, tension mounts in CHT as the agitated mob from the settler community set a house on fire and vandalised a number of shops of the indigenous community at Khagrachhari’s Mahajanpara area. The local administration has imposed Section 144 for an indefinite period to maintain the law and order situation in the area, said Khagrachari Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sujan Chandra Roy.

Earlier on 25 February 2021, Rana was jailed in a case filed over sexually harassing another indigenous student of the same school. After being released, he rejoined the institution, which prompted protests from students at the time. Earlier on 20 September, the local administrations imposed Section 144 in Khagrachhari due to the deteriorating law and order situation and the risk of property damage.
