Meghalaya’s tourism transformation: 100 new public facilities to elevate visitor experience

Meghalaya is boosting its tourism infrastructure by installing 100+ new public convenience facilities across popular tourist spots.

In a significant stride toward enhancing Meghalaya’s tourism infrastructure, the state government has approved the installation of 100 public convenience facilities across key tourist spots. This initiative addresses long-standing challenges in the sector, with an emphasis on improving basic amenities like restrooms and drinking water stations to make travel more comfortable for visitors.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh highlighted this landmark development, stating, “We’ve successfully positioned Shillong as a distinguished travel destination. In this first phase, we’ve sanctioned around 100 new facilities to serve visitors better across Meghalaya.”

Historically, issues such as limited infrastructure, poor road conditions, and insufficient restrooms have often marred tourist experiences in Meghalaya. However, the state’s Tourism Department is now implementing a community-driven approach to address these limitations more effectively.

Lyngdoh shared that tourism to Meghalaya is expected to see unprecedented growth in the coming years. “Shillong has earned the honour of being the top destination among Indian travelers, with projections pointing to a remarkable 70% rise in tourist numbers by 2025,” he remarked.

To maintain this momentum, Lyngdoh detailed plans to expand the state’s tourist circuit, beginning with popular sites such as Umiam, Sohra, and Dawki. Additionally, local youth will play an active role in these tourism efforts, with significant participation anticipated at key destinations in the coming month.

Enhanced connectivity is also on the agenda, with improved access to remote areas like Mawthadraishan and plans to expand Shillong Airport. With these upgrades underway, Meghalaya is well on its way to establishing itself as a sought-after global tourism hub.
