Professor Kondapalli on Security, Vulnerabilities, and Regional Geopolitics

Prof. Srikanth Kondapalli emphasizes the importance of bolstering Indiaā€™s security around the Siliguri Corridor amid evolving dynamics with China.

While India and China have managed to thaw their relationship through an agreement to disengage from strategic points in Ladakh, significant threats remain, particularly to vulnerable areas like the Siliguri Corridor. In a recent discussion, Prof. Srikanth Kondapalli, Professor in Chinese studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi highlighted the evolving dynamics of this bilateral relationship and its implications for India’s national security.

Prof. Kondapali emphasized the strategic importance of the Siliguri Corridor as a crucial access point for the northeastern states. He warned that, despite the disengagement in Ladakh, challenges persist due to China’s increasing military capabilities and influence in the region. The discussion underscored the necessity for India to enhance its strategic partnerships and military preparedness to effectively address these threats.

A focal point of the dialogue was the primary threat posed by China’s technological advancements, particularly in drone and cyber warfare, rather than demographic changes. Prof. Kondapali advocated for India to prioritise economic development, infrastructure improvement, and defense integration. He suggested that engaging local stakeholders and developing alternative routes could help counteract Chinese influence in the region.

Furthermore, he called for India to adopt a more offensive strategy, potentially striking deeper into Chinese territory to deter emerging threats. The conversation also explored the vulnerabilities posed by neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh and Myanmar, particularly in terms of airspace control.
